Short answer: the AI impact on jobs in Malaysia will be large but uneven. A June 2026 TalentCorp study estimated that about 697,000 jobs could be heavily affected by AI, digitalisation and the green economy over the next three to five years if workers don't reskill. At the same time, the government expects its AI push to create 300,000 to 500,000 new jobs. The labour market is still strong for now, with unemployment at a new low of 2.9% in August 2026 (DOSM). The workers who do best will be the ones who learn to use AI in their current roles.

Key takeaways

  • About 697,000 jobs face heavy impact from AI, digitalisation and the green economy within 3–5 years (TalentCorp, June 2026).
  • The government expects AI to create 300,000–500,000 new jobs (Communications Minister, September 2026).
  • Unemployment hit 2.9% in August 2026; youth unemployment was 6.3% (DOSM).
  • TalentCorp's earlier study found 70% of 60 emerging roles are in AI and digital.
  • Budget 2027 adds a new tax relief for AI subscriptions from YA2027.

How many jobs in Malaysia could AI affect?

TalentCorp, the talent agency under the Ministry of Human Resources, has studied this in two phases. Its first study, in 2024, covered 10 major sectors and found that about 620,000 jobs (18%) were highly exposed, with another 1.8 million moderately affected. The expanded June 2026 study raised the number of heavily affected jobs to around 697,000.

"Affected" doesn't mean "lost". Many of these roles will change rather than disappear: the work is reshaped, or workers move into an adjacent role. That's why both studies stress reskilling within the next few years.

Which jobs in Malaysia are most exposed to AI?

ExposureExamplesWhy
HigherData entry, clerical and admin roles, basic accounting and payroll, call centre and back-office work in global business services, routine translation and contentRepetitive tasks with text and numbers that AI handles well
ChangingSoftware developers, analysts, marketers, HR, sales support, E&E engineers and techniciansAI speeds up parts of the work, but judgement and expertise stay with people
LowerNurses, doctors, skilled trades, construction, hospitality, teachersHands-on and people-focused work

Malaysia is a major hub for global business services (shared services and outsourcing) and electrical and electronics manufacturing. Both are named in TalentCorp's research, and both are already automating routine work.

Is AI creating new jobs in Malaysia?

Yes. Big data centre and cloud investments in Johor, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, and the government's AI push, are creating demand for:

  • AI and machine learning engineers, and data scientists;
  • cloud, data centre and network engineers;
  • cybersecurity specialists;
  • people who can apply AI in their own field, such as finance, marketing, HR or manufacturing.

TalentCorp identified 60 emerging job roles; 70% of them are in AI and digital, and 20% in the green economy.

How can Malaysian workers prepare?

  1. List the tasks in your job that AI can already do, and start using AI for them yourself.
  2. Use funded training. Many employers can send staff on HRD Corp-claimable courses, and government programmes offer free or low-cost AI and digital skills courses.
  3. Learn the AI tools in your field: Copilot or ChatGPT for office work, AI features in accounting and HR software, coding assistants for developers.
  4. Build skills AI can't copy: communication in English and Bahasa Malaysia, judgement, managing people and hands-on expertise.
  5. Show results on your resume. See our Malaysian resume format guide.

What does Budget 2027 do about AI and skills?

Budget 2027, tabled on 9 October 2026, adds a new individual tax relief category for AI subscriptions from YA2027, alongside the higher individual relief of RM12,000. It also raises the minimum wage to RM2,000 from June 2027. See our guide to the minimum wage in Malaysia.
